Sea of Thieves is a
F2P first-person action-adventure game developed by Rare and published for Xbox consoles and PC by Microsoft Studios. The
game allows players from all around the world to team up and form their pirate crews and sail on their pirate ships across the fantastical environments resembling the Caribbean.
Filled with
environmental dangers, a wide array of
sandbox gameplay options, swashbuckling adventures, opportunities for teaming up with other players, and the ever-present threat of other player-led pirate crews,
Sea of Thieves has quickly become one of the most popular free-to-play titles on the gaming market.
Today, more than three years after it was originally released, this title has received
numerous upgrades and themed expansions that have greatly expanded the available in-game content and allowed players to immerse themselves into the fantastical pirate life they have always dreamed of experiencing on their TV and monitor screens, alone or together with their friends.
The pirate life available in this
game is presented to the player from the
first-person perspective, allowing anyone to quickly learn the basics of camera movement, traversal across the environment, combat, and all the necessary steps for controlling ships. Solo and coop players can explore the world of
Sea of Thieves on foot and of course, while sailing on a small and elegant sloop.
When in larger groups, players can take control over the more impressive ships, with each pirate having to focus on their tasks such as making the ship controls, pumping out the water from the ship,
repairing damage,
aiming cannons,
scouting the horizon from atop the high crow’s nest, and preparing for imminent raids and boardings of enemy ships.
The players have a built-in option to form
alliances with other pirate players or groups and to embark on large adventures searching for hidden treasures and worthy opponents. Sailing on the seas can be an adventure in itself, which can sometimes lead to the destruction of the ship in stormy seas, finding legendary and very aggressive sea monsters, and much more. In addition to combat, the game also offers players the ability to embark on
Voyages –contract tasks offered by three main trading companies present in the game -
Gold Hoarders,
Order of Souls, and the
Merchant Alliance.
Several new gameplay modes were added in the free DLC packs, including a PvP arena, Tall Tales narrative missions, and a wide array of sandbox activities such as hunting, fishing, and cooking.
Sea of Thieves is a F2P game that can be easily played on a wide array of PC configurations. The game is not demanding and can even be enjoyed on aging gaming laptops. Its online servers fully support crossplay, which enables PC and console players to play together in the same multiplayer sessions.
