Need for Speed Payback is an
arcade racing video game developed by Ghost Games and published by Electronic Arts in 2017 as the twenty-third installment in the long-running
Need for Speed series that was first introduced to the public in 1994.
More than two decades after this seminal game,
NFS Payback has managed to continue the tradition of the first NFS and deliver to games from all around the world the chance to create their ultimate supercar and engage in hot pursuits against not only the competing drivers but also aggressive police forces.
Set in the large open-world environment of
Fortune Valley, the fictional version of Las Vegas, this game is centered on a single-player campaign that features not one, but three main characters with their own distinct set of skills and driving preferences. As always, the main story is centered around betrayal and revenge, with the main antagonists being the leaders and drivers from The House, a shady cartel that has managed to take control not only over Fortune Valley’s casinos and criminals but also cops and other officials.
With this approach, gamers have the opportunity to get immersed into different types of driving styles and experience the long scripted campaign that is filled with an incredible variety of challenges, driving areas, environmental challenges (in addition to the great advancement in environmental destructibility, the game also features a full 24-hour day-night cycle as well as weather effects such as rain).
As for the content found in the
Need for Speed Payback game, gamers can relax by simply exploring the large and varied open world and engaging competitions in five distinct categories –
Race,
Off-Road,
Drift,
Drag, and
Runner. One of the aspects of the game that received great expansion is the ability to upgrade and customize every car present in the game (
74 vehicles in the base game, and more accessible via DLC packages). The supported car list even includes officially licensed models from Audi, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Koenigsegg, Pagani, and many others.
While the gameplay of this title is regarded today as fun and engaging, critics and gamers have criticized its lacking story, lack of certain events during free-roam gameplay, presence of aggressive microtransactions, and several other features. Still, for any player seeking a visually stunning arcade racer,
Need for Speed Payback offers hours of great fun and a chance to drive some of the most exciting cars of today.
